FreeCAD Tools Playlist

This tutorial contains corrections for some errors that I made in my tutorials demonstrating how to use the Linear Pattern and Polar Pattern tools.

The Linear Pattern Tool takes a feature and creates one or more copies along a axis. It is part of FreeCAD's Part Design Workbench. You can use the Linear Pattern Tool to create one or more copies of a feature along a straight axis over a known distance. Examples of this include the rows of holes for shelf pins in the side of a bookcase, or a row of hooks for holding tools or clothing. The copies are evenly spaced along the length of the axis.

The Polar Pattern Tool takes a feature and rotates one or more copies around the origin. It is part of FreeCAD's Part Design Workbench.

The Thickness Tool takes a solid shape and makes it hollow. It is part of FreeCAD's Part Design Workbench. You can use the Thickness Tool to create boxes, pipes, hoses, etc. The tool works by converting a solid shape such as a boxes, and then removing faces that you've selected to create a hollow shape. This allows you to easily create objects such as electronic project boxes, vases, tool holders, etc.

FreeCAD sometimes has multiple ways of doing similar things differently to achieve the same result. The Link Tool and the Clone Tool are examples of this. Both tools allow you to reuse existing components in your models but they do it slightly differently.

Let's have a brief look at how to tools work.

The Additive Pipe Tool allows you to create a pipe from one or more sketches(or profiles) following a path in a model. The Additive Pipe Tool does this by creating smooth transitions from one profile to another while gollowing the pipe that you've selected. This video shows you how to use the Additive Pipe Tool and also discusses some of the limitations of the tool.
The Loft Tool creates lofts that have smooth, curved edges by default, but can be instructed to used ruled or straight edges when the loft is created. You cannot create a single loft that is both curved and has ruled surfaces.
The Link Tool allows you to take an existing design and "link" it to your current design. This is different from a straight "cut and paste" of the design because the "linked" design does not become part of the current model file like the pasted elements. Rather, a link is made to the file which allows it to be updated independently of your current design.
The Groove Tool allows you to create grooves around an object. The groove is defined as a sketch that is not limited to simple geometric shapes - although they tend to be in the work that we do.
The Mirror Tool allows you to mirror an object about a plane.
The Revolve Tool allows you to revolve a 2D sketch around an axis. You can control the size of the resulting object by moving the sketch away from the origin of the sketch.
The Pocket Tool is used to take a sketch on a plane and create a pocket or void in a solid.

The Pad Tool is used to take a sketch and convert it into a solid. It can also be used to add solid features to an existing solid once the sketch is placed on a face.

This tutorial shows how to use the FreeCADTechDraw Workbench in furniture design. The TechDraw Workbench allows you to create technical drawing, or plans, of your parts.
